When the 2024 GMC Sierra EV starts appearing on the roads and highways of Sudbury and beyond, you’ll know it’s something different and exceptional. The Sierra EV replaces gas and diesel power with a fully-electric powertrain that produces zero emissions but does it without compromising capability. The Sierra EV delivers everything you’d want and expect from a full-size light-duty pickup truck, but it does it in a way that gives you a glimpse of what the future looks like.
A truck as technologically advanced as the 2024 GMC Sierra needs to look the part, and it certainly does. However, truck shoppers can be a reasonably traditional constituency, so the manufacturer doesn’t want to scare the horses, as they say. The Sierra EV manages the balance between traditional and futuristic in spectacular style. It’s immediately evident that it’s something different, but it’s also obvious it’s a pickup truck with a job to do.
There’s no front grille, as there isn’t an internal combustion engine that requires cooling. On the front of the 2024 Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 – the first model available – an LED backlight surround with a large backlit GMC logo is a stylish substitute for a traditional front grille. The inside is equally contemporary, too, with a minimalistic look dominated by a massive 16.8-inch-diagonal freeform infotainment touchscreen at the centre of the dash.
Before the Sierra EV gets the chance to impress with its high-tech gizmos and luxurious interior appointments, prospective buyers need to know about its capability, credentials, and all-around practicality. None of that is a problem, as the Sierra EV can tow up to 4,309 kg and haul a payload of up to 590 kg. This exciting new truck has front and rear electric drive units that work together in an e4WD system. And in Max Power mode – one of five available drive modes – the Sierra EV produces a GM-estimated 754 horsepower and 785 lb.-ft. of torque.
Range anxiety isn’t an issue for GMC’s first all-electric half-ton truck, as the battery delivers a GM-estimated range of up to 643 km on a full charge. And if you need extra range in a hurry, the GMC’s 800 Volt DC Public Fast Charging capability at up to 350kW lets you put up to 160 km of range into the battery in around 10 minutes.
It’s difficult to know where to start regarding the raft of cutting-edge technology you’ll come across in the 2024 GMC Sierra EV. You might be excited about the Onboard Power Station Pro feature that turns Sierra EV Denali into a mobile power source with up to 10.2kW of off-board power you can deploy and take advantage of in various situations. Alternatively, it might be the trailering-capable Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance technology or the Air Ride Adaptive Suspension that gets you, which as well as delivering a more comfortable ride, also provides the ability to raise or lower the truck by approximately 2 inches.
Of course, the headline act will always be the electric powertrain. Especially when you experience it in Max Power Mode, which delivers on the promises made by its name and lets you propel the Sierra EV from 0 to 100 kph in an estimated 4.7 seconds.
