It won’t be long until most new vehicles you see on the roads of Sudbury and elsewhere will be powered exclusively by electricity. Until then, however, many still see electric vehicles as a novelty. That will only change when electric vehicles are as stylish, practical, versatile, desirable, and affordable as their combustion engine counterparts. It’s asking a lot for an EV to deliver all that at an affordable price, especially in an SUV format, but that’s precisely what you get with the sensational 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV.
It shouldn’t be surprising that the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV shares much of its sheet metal with its gas-powered and EV hatchback namesakes. Last year’s redesign brought in a fresh new look that’s even more striking in the Bolt EUV’s taller, wider, and longer compact crossover SUV format. It’s the body style most shoppers want, but it’s been out of reach for many budgets with a fully electric powertrain until now.
Unlike some other small and midsize electric vehicles of recent times, the 2023 Bolt EV is designed not to look like a mobile billboard for electric powertrains. It’s not unusual for some EVs and hybrids to have exterior styling that cries out for the world to notice them and appreciate how “different” they are. However, the Bolt EV is just a great-looking little SUV that doesn’t fall into that category. You won’t even have to worry about which model you like the look of the best, as the 2023 Bolt EV is only available in a single high-specification LT trim level.
The 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV doesn’t do complicated. As well as its single trim level, the little Chevy also sticks to a single electric powertrain option. The best part about that is you don’t have to agonize over which battery pack to choose if you think a little extra range and expense from a bigger battery might be helpful, “just in case.”
A 65 kWh battery pack and a single electric motor power the front wheels of the 2023 Bolt EUV. Like any EV, it’s only being honest to admit that the battery pack does add some weight to the platform. Still, the 200 horsepower and 266 lb.-ft. of torque, the system develops results in an enjoyably lively performance for a car of these relatively diminutive proportions. How does getting you to 96 km/h from a standing start in 7.0 seconds sound? Of course, the driving range on a full charge of the battery is what most people want to know about, and the Bolt EUV’s estimated range is a practical 397 km. Different driving modes are available that allow for coasting or one-pedal driving almost to a complete stop, and the onboard 11-kW charger can fully charge the battery pack in approximately seven hours using a 240-volt home outlet.
Value for money isn’t usually at the top of the plus column for most electric vehicles at the moment, but the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV isn’t most electric vehicles. The standard features for both models go well beyond covering the basics, which would be true with any powertrain under the hood or even the floor. Standard equipment delivers impressive connectivity with a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Both models also get standard heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, Chevrolet Safety Assist, a dual-level charge cord, and plenty more.
Chevrolet Safety Assist is a comprehensive suite of advanced active safety features. It includes Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert, Front Pedestrian Braking, Following Distance Indicator, and IntelliBeam headlights. You can even specify your Bolt EUV with Super Cruise, which lets the Chevy take over to deliver hands-free driver assistance on divided and compatible highways.
The 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV is a great urban-friendly subcompact crossover SUV that’s stylish, practical, and enjoyable to drive. The fact that the fully-electric powertrain could almost be considered a bonus rather than the whole point of the vehicle is testimony to the EUV’s extensive appeal.
