Apart from the name and the classic pickup truck silhouette, the 2023 GMC Canyon is an all-new version of this popular midsize pickup truck that makes it an even stronger contender than it already was in this increasingly competitive segment. If you’re shopping for a new pickup truck in Sudbury and a full-size truck is more than you need, the all-new Canyon has to be the number one choice. The new Canyon is incredibly stylish, fantastic off-road, packed with the latest technology, and boasts best-in-class towing and hauling capacities.
You may be familiar with Elevation, AT4, and Denali trim levels in the GMC Canyon family, but there’s a new kid on the block this year in the shape of the exciting new AT4X. And as if that wasn’t enough, there’s an even more exciting and desirable AT4X Edition 1 Package that will have what the manufacturer describes as “extremely limited availability.” The AT4 was already the Canyon to opt for if serious off-roading was high on your agenda. Still, the AT4X takes that off-road capability to another level, and the Edition 1 Package goes even further.
Most of the new Canyon lineup benefits from a 2.0-inch factory lift that delivers a 9.6-inch ground clearance, but the AT4X gets a 3.0-inch factory lift that gives it a 10.7-inch ground clearance. The AT4 and Denali still feature a limited-slip rear differential, but the AT4X gets power-locking front and rear differentials and Multimatic internal bypass shocks. The AT4X Edition one goes even further with a pair of underbody cameras, a reconfigurable bed rail system, 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels, a Comeup winch, plenty of skid plates, a 30-inch lighting bar, and a bumper with a safari bar that’s unique to the AT4X Edition 1.
A single powertrain features in all versions of the 2023 GMC Canyon, even the all-singing, all-dancing AT4X Edition 1. However, there’s no need for alternatives as the unit in question is the High Output version of GM’s excellent 2.7-litre turbo-four. This engine comes in three different tunings in the Canyon’s GM cousin, but the Canyon gets the big-boy with its 310 horsepower and 430 lb.-ft. of torque that goes to the rear or all four wheels through a new, quicker-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission.
As well as getting you down the road (or off-road) very nicely in the new GMC Canyon, this impressive powerplant also helps the midsize GMC pickup to best-in-class figures for towing and hauling. The Elevation, AT4, and Denali versions of the new 2023 Canyon can tow up to a maximum of 3,493 kg (7,700 pounds), and the Elevation 2WD can haul up to 744 kg (1,640 pounds). Those are numbers that full-size trucks would have been proud to offer not too long ago.
The interior of the 2023 GMC Canyon can rival some luxury sedans and SUVs for its premium feel and abundant technology, and there’s all the safety tech you could wish for too. All models come with the Canyon Pro Safety Package, which includes Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking with Bicyclist Detection, IntelliBeam auto high beams, Following Distance Indicator, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, and Forward Collision Alert.
The new model also sees the introduction of all-new drive modes, designed to provide owners with a robust driving experience and make accessing the off-road potential of the new Canyon accessible to all. The modes include Terrain: for low-speed off-roading driving and rock crawling; off-road: for general off-road driving; Normal: for balanced everyday driving on streets and highways; and Tow/haul: for hauling those heavy loads and towing. The fifth mode is Baja Mode, exclusive to AT4X models and designed for high-speed off-roading.
