New vehicle shoppers in Sudbury and across Canada and North America have never had more great vehicles to choose from, and the technological advances we’re seeing are genuinely transformational. However, although we like the most advanced tech, we still like our full-size trucks to look a certain way. The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 has all the technology available you can imagine and then some, but it still manages to check all the aesthetic boxes that leave you no doubt about its rugged, hard-working, traditional pickup truck roots.
Most of us are brought up to believe that no vehicle can be all things to all people. However, the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 is a full-size light-duty pickup truck that may have gotten closer than anything that’s come before. After last year’s stunning redesign, the Sierra 1500 has almost unlimited personalities that range from being a no-nonsense, hard-working contractor’s tool to a luxury status symbol, off-road champion, and anything in between.
The exterior styling of the 2023 Sierra 1500 is classic, blocky, full-size truck that looks leaves you in no doubt about it, meaning business. The entry-level Pro model appears perfectly at home on the construction site, the farm, or any other workplace. On the other hand, the most high-end versions of the half-ton GMC wouldn’t look out of place at a movie premiere or outside the finest restaurant. SUVs should be looking over their shoulders as the Sierra can easily be a superb family vehicle. And what about the numerous options for configuring the GMC to be a formidable off-roader? If the maximum of six seats is enough for your needs, the 2023 Sierra 1500 can be a viable alternative to almost any vehicle you care to mention.
The Sierra 1500’s maximum towing capacity of 5,897 kg (13,000 pounds) will be a significant attraction for many truck shoppers, and if towing is all you need from a truck, the Sierra 1500 is right up there with the best. But this truck’s sheer capability and versatility mean there’s much more it can do than just towing trailers. With its three cabs, three bed sizes, four available engines, and as many as eight trim levels to choose from, there’s a configuration to suit almost any application. And that’s before you even think about choices such as colours, interiors, and the vast array of options available to customize the Sierra to meet your demands and needs.
These days, the base 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 is called the Pro, which has a standard specification that would almost have been a mid-range trim not too long ago. If a rear-drive truck is your preference, you also have available the SLE, Elevation, and SLT trim levels. However, most buyers will likely want a four-wheel drive model, and you then have even higher specification options with the AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate trim levels.
Few vehicles offer shoppers as many engine options as full-size trucks, and the 2023 Sierra 1500 is no exception, with four engines available. Retail consumers should pay attention to the base engine for the sake of it because it’s a sensational 2.7-litre turbo-four producing 310 horsepower and 430 lb.-ft. of torque. A more traditional larger displacement engine is next in the lineup, which comes in the shape of a 5.3-litre V-8 with 355 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque to bring to the party. If you’re buying a Sierra in the SLT trim level or higher, you then have the option of a mighty 6.2-litre V-8 that provides the truck with 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque.
Like last year, a 3.0-litre Duramax inline-six turbodiesel is the last of the four available powerplants, and this unit is an option for every model from the SLE trim upwards. However, this year it’s a more powerful version that puts out 305 horsepower and 495 lb.-ft. of torque, which is an extra 28 horsepower and 35 lb.-ft. Depending on your engine, drivetrain, and trim level choices, the power gets sent to the rear or all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic or one of four different ten-speed automatics.
Some big-name alternatives to the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 are available. Still, the Sierra is a match for any of them, and it also brings a more premium element to the market, especially at the higher trim levels.
