If a light-duty pickup truck needs to be bigger or capable enough for what you need to get done in Sudbury or further afield, the obvious solution is a heavy-duty model. Choosing which heavy-duty truck to go for was a challenging decision. However, the all-new 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD is so versatile, flexible, and capable that you can configure it to be just about any truck you want and need it to be.
Although the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD isn’t part of a new generation, this mid-cycle refresh of the heavy-duty pickup truck line is significant. You’ll first notice how different the truck looks for the 2024 model year. It would be correct to say the grille, headlamps, and front bumper have been restyled, but that could be under-selling the changes. The whole look is simpler, sleeker, and less fussy, and that’s before you even get to the new Midnight Edition and ZR2 models.
The interior is spacious for up to six people, and there’s a raft of new technology to make life easier for everyone, especially the driver. The new Silverado HD can be a more capable off-roader than ever, and there are many ways to make it look just how you want, including new colours for 2024 and the blacked-out Midnight Edition.
Regardless of how good it looks and how luxurious and high-tech the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD can be, what’s under the hood and what it can tow and haul will always be close to the start of any conversation. Like most heavy-duty offerings, the new Silverado HD is available with a standard gas engine and the option of a powerful turbodiesel. It’s not a revolutionary blueprint, but there’s no need for further options with two powerplants as good as these. The 2500 HD and 3500 HD versions of the 2024 Silverado HD feature the same engine options.
The standard unit is a 6.8-litre gas V-8 that develops 401 horsepower and 464 lb.-ft. of torque, which gets to the rear or all four wheels of the Silverado HD through an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. The optional engine also uses a 10-speed Allison transmission, but this one is a 6.8-litre Duramax V-8 turbodiesel that provides the big Chevy with 470 horsepower and 975 lb.-ft. of torque. When correctly specified and equipped, a 2024 Silverado 3500 HD with the Duramax diesel engine can tow up to 16,329 kg (36,000 pounds).
It’s hard to fail to be impressed by the 12.3-inch Driver Information Centre and 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen that most versions of the 2024 Silverado HD feature. However, some of the most impressive technology onboard the heavy-duty Chevy pickup is there to make trailering easier than ever. Only some people are as skilled as they’d like to be when maneuvering a trailer, but help is at hand. With the likes of Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control with Trailering, and Transparent Trailer View that’s now available for conventional and fifth-wheel trailering, serious towing has never been more accessible.
The 14 camera views available with the 2024 Silverado HD can make hitching up, backing up, and general maneuvers easier than you’d ever have imagined. And with standard features throughout the range, such as Forward Collision Alert & Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, and Land Departure Warning, getting the most out of these heavy-duty pickup trucks has never been easier.
